How do you match sublimation colors on sportswear?

Define the target with a named physical reference or another explicitly agreed source, then record the artwork revision and color space. Use a controlled output route covering the printer or RIP, applicable output profile, ink or dye system, transfer medium, fabric code and base color, plus the production heat and pressure conditions. Print a strike-off or garment sample on the actual intended fabric and compare it with the target under agreed conditions before bulk release.

If the project uses instrumental color difference, agree the instrument setup, formula, material scope, comparison conditions, and acceptance tolerance before the result exists. Retain the approved physical specimen and reconnect bulk fabric and print lots to it. A designer still needs usable digital values, but those values should not silently become the acceptance standard for an unknown output condition.

Physical target

Identify the exact supplied standard, approved swatch, strike-off, garment, or other retained specimen, including edition or ID, condition, date, owner, and permitted use.

Digital definition

Record the artwork values, color space, embedded profile, source application, revision, and any conversion. “Blue” or an untagged screenshot is not a controlled definition.

Production target

Name the approved result on the actual fabric and process. The reference should show which style, panel, colorway, size range, lot, and reorder scope it can cover.

Acceptance rule

Agree whether review is visual, instrumental, or both; define the conditions and tolerance; and state which person can approve, hold, adjust, resample, or accept an exception.

    Record the human-readable color name, exact source or physical reference, intended garment, panels, fabric, colorway, sizes, logos, gradients, photographic content, and variants. Decide which areas are critical before seeing the result.

    Check the current editable source, stable preview, profile status, working space, transparency, gradients, black treatment, sponsor marks, name and number variants, panel map, scale, and revision.

ISO 105-J03 describes calculation of color differences between specimens of the same material measured under the same conditions and allows a maximum tolerance to be set for the required end use. That does not make one number suitable for every fabric, texture, print, garment area, logo, gradient, viewing condition, customer, or instrument setup.

Will a HEX or RGB value match the final sublimated jersey?

Not by itself. The displayed and printed appearance also depends on color-space interpretation, profiles, output system, ink or dye, paper, fabric, base color, transfer conditions, viewing conditions, and other controlled variables. Approve the result on the intended production fabric.

Is an ICC profile enough to guarantee accurate sublimation color?

No. A suitable profile helps a color-management system translate between defined device spaces, but the profile must match the actual output condition and cannot control every artwork, consumable, fabric, process, viewing, maintenance, sampling, or bulk-lot variable.

Should color be approved from a digital mockup?

Use the mockup to review design direction, layout, and revision. Do not use it as the only production color approval when the output condition and physical substrate matter. Review an identified strike-off or garment sample made on the intended fabric and process.
