Start with the exact claim and product scope, then choose evidence that measures that property. Control the production-intent fabric, finish, color, garment zone, specimen orientation, prewashing, conditioning, liquid application, environment, endpoint, criteria, and comparison. Use a separate garment wear trial for wet cling, contact comfort, chafing observations, and sweat visibility.
No single moisture test proves that a garment is “sweat-proof,” comfortable for every wearer, or quick-drying in every climate. Liquid transport, vertical wicking, drying rate, visible darkening, wet handfeel, and whole-garment comfort are related questions, not interchangeable results.
Claim-to-method fit
A method name is useful only when its measured property matches the words a customer will see.

Name the product, size, colorway, panel, body side, seam proximity, liner, print, pocket, mesh zone, and orientation. A front chest, underarm, waistband, and inner-thigh panel can behave differently.
Identify conditioning, prewashing, wash cycles, detergent or care route, temperature, humidity, airflow, liquid, applied amount, starting wet state, and endpoint.
Store the exact claim wording, channel, market, activity, target user, acceptance criteria, comparator, decision owner, represented styles, colors and lots, plus exclusions.
Controlled workflow
Criteria written after testing can turn comparison into an unsupported marketing decision.
Copy the proposed label, PDP, sales-sheet, packaging, marketplace, or wholesale wording. Separate explicit claims from reasonable implied meanings such as faster drying than a named control.
Define whether the evidence supports material selection, sample approval, a comparison, a marketing statement, care review, corrective action, or bulk release. List covered and excluded colors, sizes, zones, lots, finishes, and care states.
Choose liquid transport, wicking, drying, appearance, air or vapor behavior, or wear-trial evidence because it matches the claim. Record the standard and edition or the approved internal protocol; do not invent a standard reference.
Identify test units, replicate plan, fabric direction, garment zone, untreated or benchmark control, production lot, prewash route, conditioning standard, deviations, and independent laboratory or internal owner.
Record the liquid or moisture source, application amount and location, specimen orientation, starting mass or wet state, temperature, relative humidity, airflow, timing, and measurement endpoint required by the selected route.
Where relevant, define coded wearers, fit, activity, duration, climate, sweat or moisture condition, color and lighting reference, wet cling, handfeel, contact zones, adjustment behavior, and safety stop rules.
Keep raw readings, observations, images, method reports, deviations, controls, failed or incomplete runs, and the criteria version. “Pass” without units, conditions, scope, and evidence is not a reusable result.
Approve, qualify, hold, reject, or request corrective action and retest. State the exact wording and scope supported, the evidence owner, decision date, production inputs that must stay controlled, and triggers for new testing.

Claim boundary
A narrower supported claim is more useful than a broad phrase the test did not evaluate.

Sources and method
Recent discussions ask for clothing that leaves minimal sweat marks, shirts for runners who finish soaked, and a shirt that manages moisture without an unwanted wet feel. These posts show buyer language and use conditions. They do not verify a brand claim, identify one winning fiber, diagnose an individual garment, or establish a laboratory threshold.
The AATCC method directory lists separate methods for liquid moisture management, vertical and horizontal wicking, drying time or rate, and water-vapor transmission. AATCC TM195 addresses objective measurement and classification of liquid moisture-management properties; AATCC's standards update explains that TM197 and TM213 cover vertical wicking to specified distances or times. TM199 and TM200 use different drying routes and conditions. Their summaries do not authorize copying a proprietary procedure or treating the methods as interchangeable.
ASTM D1776/D1776M-20(2024) covers textile conditioning when a method specifies it. The FTC advertising FAQ states that objective claims need a reasonable basis and evidence before advertising. Current standards, qualified laboratories, protocol owners, destination-market requirements, and the exact claim still control each project.

No. Wicking describes liquid movement through or along a textile under a defined method. Drying describes moisture loss to a defined endpoint under controlled conditions. A material can move liquid without being the fastest to dry, and results can change with construction, finish, moisture load, environment, care, and garment design.
No. A fabric drying result does not by itself establish garment ventilation, fit, wet cling, seam contact, activity, climate, sweat rate, or wearer perception. Use production-intent garment trials for those questions and state the limits of the wearer sample.
Define the fabric and color, garment zone, moisture source and amount, application location, lighting, background, observation times, camera or visual reference, wet and dry endpoints, and acceptance criteria. Compare the planned high-risk colors and repeat after relevant care when the claim covers laundered products.
Test the care states relevant to the claim and release decision. Record the exact prewash procedure, cycles, detergent, drying route, fabric lot, finish, and conditioning. Do not assume an initial result automatically represents later care states.
One moisture-management result is not enough to support every reasonable meaning of sweat-proof. The phrase may imply no visible marks, no wetness, no leakage, or even reduced sweating. Use narrower wording tied to the property, conditions, product scope, comparison, and evidence actually held.
